Nathaniel had a lab visit and is receiving a transfusion of platelets today. He’s been complaining over the past week that his leg is hurting, so doctors ordered x-rays. Unfortunately, x-rays have revealed that his leg is not healing properly (partly due to chemo), and the plate has shifted a bit, and one of the screws is loose. They are thinking when he got his new prosthetic and had to start chemo again, that he didn’t have the same level of support on his leg as before and therefore, didn’t allow for his leg to fully heal. There are days I just feel like the uphill battle is never going to end. Less than a week ago, we were so happy to be at the end of chemo, and now we are having to schedule yet another surgery. If his scans that are currently scheduled on May 2 come out looking good in terms of the cancer, then they will schedule surgery on his leg and take his mediport out at the same time. One surgery is better than 2, but until then, he will no longer be able to use his prosthetic and will have to go back to using crutches. Do you know how hard it is to think about another summer that your child cannot enjoy the simple pleasures like running around? It’s often very difficult to keep your head up, and I try my best to greet every day with a smile, but let’s be honest, I just want to know when the pain, the surgeries, the transfusions, and all that goes with it will be a thing of the past. I am not a happy mother today. I’m angry that my son has to continue to endure so much pain and so many setbacks. Not a good day for the Contreras Family — again. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more. Please keep us in your thoughts.
